Pellet burning appliance is for those who value high efficiency and clean-burning technology. Pellet stoves and inserts burn compressed pellets usually made of wood, but they can also be derived from other organic materials. Some models can burn nutshells, corn kernels, and small wood chips.
Here's what Energy.gov says about pellet burning products:
Pellet fuel appliances are more convenient to operate than ordinary wood stoves or fireplaces, and some have much higher combustion and heating efficiencies. As a consequence of this, they produce very little air pollution. In fact, pellet stoves are the cleanest solid fuel, residential heating appliance. Pellet stoves that are certified by the EPA are likely to be in the 70% to 83% efficiency range. Pellet stoves have heating capacities that range between 8,000 and 90,000 Btu per hour. They are suitable for homes as well as apartments or condominiums.
A pellet burning stove can be installed inside of an existing fireplace to increase its efficiency. This type of use of a stove is very similar to that of a pellet burning insert.
Pellet stoves and inserts require regular maintenance and cleaning. The homeowner must clean the appliance on weekly basis and a professional should do that at least once a year.
All pellet appliances need electricity to run blower, auger and controls; they consume about 100 kW/hr per month (about $10 worth) and, unless there is a back-up power source, they will not work when the electricity is out.
Pellet fuel is sometimes hard to come by, which is why the home owner must plan for the heating season ahead and arrange for appropriate storage.
Notes on Venting of Pellet Burning Stoves
Out of all solid-fuel burning appliances, pellet stoves are probably the most versatile when it comes to venting them. They can be vented vertically or horizontally, through the roof, wall or existing masonry flue.
Venting for pellet stoves does require a lot of parts and pieces, which will largely depend on the venting configuration itself.
