A pellet burning insert is very similar to a pellet burning stove, but made specifically to be installed inside of an existing fireplace to increase its efficiency. Pellet inserts are made without legs or pedestal and sit right on the floor of the fireplace. They also feature a surround that covers the gaps between the insert itself and the fireplace opening.

Notes on Venting of Pellet Burning Inserts
Venting configuration of the pellet burning insert is very similar to that of the wood burning insert. It consists of flexible and/or rigid components, runs through the existing flue all the way up to the very top of the chimney and terminates with a cap. Exact venting configuration will largely depend on the model selected, size and length of the chimney.
